Dettifoss
The construction of a new road to the major tourist attraction Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall, in northeast Iceland was completed on Wednesday last week. The paved road greatly improves access to the waterfall and is a revolution for the local tourist industry.

The new road lies to the west of the glacial river Jökulsá á Fjöllum which feeds the waterfall. It doesn’t shorten the distance between Reykjavík and Dettifoss in kilometers but makes the journey much more comfortable, ruv.is reports.

The old road which lies closer to Reykjahlíd by lake Mývatn is a gravel road and isn’t suitable for all types of vehicles. Bus drivers taking tourists to the waterfall used to curse the bumpy road.

The new road, on the other hand, is elevated and is classified as a main road. The Icelandic Road Administration has yet to decide to which extent the road will be cleared during snowfall in the winter.
