“It’s going well, right now we’re investigating tourist access to the area and how we can do that best,” says Vidir Reynisson, section chief of Iceland’s Civil Protection Department about plans to allow tourists to start visiting the active volcano in southern Iceland. According to Reynisson, if their safety can be protected, there is no reason to continue preventing tourist access.Bad weather has affected South Iceland last night and this morning, obscuring the view of the eruption and gas cloud. Reynisson says however that the Civil Protection Department’s work is going well and that the volcano is being closely monitored. The department has called its scientific advisers to a meeting this morning, where the volcano’s status and likely future developments are being discussed. The volcano at Fimmvorduhals seems to have changed little since yesterday; although changes in intensity can come fast and with little warning.
