Many foreigners have come to Iceland exclusively to see the eruption. There are many ways to get close to the eruption.

Iceland volcano
Four helicopters fly non-stop sight-seeing flights over the glacier and it is also possible to go in SUVs or snowmobiles.

The first few days after the eruption started there were not so many foreign tourists, but that has changed. According to Hótel Rangá’s owner Fridrik Pálsson many are now coming only to see the eruption. Most are fathers coming with their children.

Many tourist companies offer rides over the eruption on helicopters or planes. A one hour special costs about 250 euros. It is necessary to reserve places in advance.

On Thursday, a holiday in Iceland, the so-called Maundy Thursday, approximately 80 planes flew from Reykjavík to the eruption site.

One of the most beautiful attractions is the “lava fall” when the glowing lava falls down the mountain towards Thórsmörk. Our man on the scene took these pictures late last night.
