Iceland volcano
It is assumed that the cost of repairing roads damaged because of the volcanic eruptions in Fimmvörduháls and Eyjafjallajökull last spring could be well over ISK 100 million (USD 883,000, EUR 651,000), as Minister of Transport Ögmundur Jónasson said in his reply to deputy MP Arndís Soffía Sigurdardóttir’s request on the matter.

The Icelandic Road Administration estimates that the reconstruction of the Ring Road which was torn in the flooding of Markarfljót costs ISK 30 million (USD 265,000, EUR 195,000), ruv.is reports.

Additionally, the administration has contributed funds to the municipality Rangárthing eystra for the repair of the jeep track across the Fimmvörduháls mountain range.

Other related projects cost around ISK 15 million.

The final cost of road construction in the area following the volcanic eruptions is unclear because preparations are in the early stages but it is assumed that it could amount to well over ISK 100 million with changes to river channels and levees taken into account.
